The first way is to go to the Start screen and type “cmd” and hit enter. Then, type “netstat -an” and hit enter. This will show you all of the network connections on your computer. You will see a list of protocols that are being used, including “Photo Viewer”. If Photo Viewer is on the list, then change it to be the application you want to use. The second way is to open up Control Panel and click on Programs and Features. Then, under photo viewing programs, select Photo Viewer from the list.
You can configure your computer to open images in a variety of different ways, depending on the program you are using to view them. You can have JPG images open with Photoshop and GIF images open with Photo Viewer, for example.
To change the default media player, open the System Preferences and select the Media Player tab. In the Player section, select a different media player from the list. For example, if you want to use VLC Media Player as your default media player, select it from the list. If you want to use another media player, change its setting in the Player section.
Adjust Default Programs
If you’re still running Windows XP, then it’s important to change the default program so that you can open a file with. This is different from Windows 7, which defaults to the File Explorer program.
In Windows 7 and higher, you can change which program is used when opening a specific file type. Click on the Control Panel and then click on Default Programs.
The first option is to set your default programs, which will include all of the programs that you use most often. The second option is to Associate a file type or protocol with a program, which will allow you to control how the program accesses files.
If you click on the second link, you’ll get a list of the different programs installed on your computer. Select the program and Windows will tell you how many defaults this programs is set to close.
You can choose to have this program open all the default file types or specific file types.
In the example above, Internet Explorer is set to open GIF images and Microsoft Office 2010 is set to open JPG files. All other formats are set to open with Windows Photo Viewer. If you want to use a different program to open pictures, for example, select that program from the list and then choose Set this program as default.
Adjust via Open With
If you want to change the default program for opening a file type, you can do so by going to the File menu and selecting Adjust a file type or protocol. This will allow you to browse through the hundreds of file types stored on your computer and then change the default program for opening that type of file.
When you click Change Program, you’ll get a list of programs that are recommended and other programs, as well as an option to browse to a program that is not currently listed.
This method has the advantage of allowing you to choose any program you want to open a file, as well as the ability to manually add programs that are not currently registered with Windows.
You can open this file by right-clicking on the file in Explorer and clicking on Open With. Then, you can choose the default program to open it with.
Windows 8, 10 Default Programs
In Windows 8 and Windows 10, you can now choose which app to use when you open a file. If you have a desktop app installed, it will open in the foreground. If you have a Windows Store app installed, it will open in the background.
You can follow the same procedures as for Windows 7, but the only difference is that you will see the Windows Store apps listed as options too. You can change other defaults like the default media player to another program or app of your choice rather than the Video or Movies & TV app in Windows 8 and Windows 10.
I hope you can now double-click on an image and expect the correct program to open. You should be careful changing these settings because there is no way to simply reset all default programs back to their original values. I’m not sure why this option doesn’t exist, because it should, but it’s just not there.
The only way to reset default programs is to either download a registry file that will manually change each value or create a new user profile. These settings are stored on a per user basis, so creating a new user account will start you from scratch. If you have any questions, feel free to post a comment. Enjoy!
